There are several ways to find images on this site:
Use for simple searches. In the search box, at the top right corner of every page, type a word or phrase and press return or click ‘Go’. The data will be searched and all relevant matches will then display as small images (thumbnail) in your results. To see more information or a larger image click on thumbnail.
The wildcard (%) can be used in place of unknown characters or to widen the search.
When you are searching for more than one word or wish to exclude specific words from the search you can use Implied Boolean Operators which are + (and) and/or - (or).
Using ‘+’ against a word means the word must appear in the items found and using ‘-‘ against a word means the word must not appear in the items found. For example:
+river -clyde
All items returned must contain ‘river’ but not ‘Clyde’.
+river +clyde
All items returned must contain both ‘river’ and ‘Clyde’.
If you already know some details of the image you require then you can find it quicker by using the Advanced Search.
Enter the data in one or more of the fields and be as specific as possible in order to generate a meaningful set of results.
If you enter data into more than one field the search will only return items that contain all of the specified data.
You can browse all the images by clicking ‘Browse images’ on the left hand navigation. The images will be displayed as thumbnails. Click on thumbnail to see more information or a larger image.
Beside each thumbnail image in the Gallery and under each item is a checkbox. Clicking in this box shows a red tick and changes the status of the item to ‘Selected’. The item will be automatically placed into the ‘Selections’ page and can be viewed at any time using the ‘Selections’ link on the navigation bar.
To remove the item from the selections simply click the checkbox to remove the tick. Once the page is refreshed the item will no longer appear in the selections.
Using the ‘Clear All Selections’ link removes the tick from all the selected items.
The ‘Previous Searches’ page records a history of all the searches you have performed. To view the results of a search simply click on the link.
This function is session based so that when you close the ‘Previous Search’ history will be cleared.
Results of searches are returned in the form of a gallery of thumbnail images. By default the gallery consists of eight thumbnails. This however can be changed by entering the desired number into the ‘Display Items’ field and clicking return. Navigation between gallery pages is done by either using the Previous and Next arrow buttons or by entering the required page number in the page number field and clicking return. The gallery page includes a ‘crumb trail’. This displays the type of search used to generate the current gallery e.g Show All>Gallery. The words are hyperlinks which allows you to navigate back e.g. to the Gallery. To add an item to your ‘Selections’ click on the checkbox and a red tick will appear. Clicking it again will remove it from the selection. To view image details click on thumbnail to access the ‘Item Record’ page. This will give you more information about the image such as date, title, etc.
The ‘Item Record’ page displays the image and the corresponding data. It is possible to select the image (see Selections above) from this page, as well as a viewing a higher resolution ‘Larger Image’, and enables the page to be emailed as a link. The ‘Item Record’ page also includes a ‘crumb trail’. This displays the search used to generate the current set of results and allows you to link back to the gallery containing the current item. Navigation between ‘Item Record’ pages is done by either using the Previous and Next arrow buttons or by entering the required page number in the page number field and pressing return.
The ‘Larger Image’ page displays a larger, high resolution copy of the current item. To return to the ‘Item Record’ page click on the ‘crumb trail’. Navigation between ‘Larger Image’ pages is done by either using the Previous and Next arrow buttons or by entering the required page number in the page number field and pressing return.
Prints can be ordered by browsing or searching and placing a tick in the check box next to each image. You can review you choices in Selections before proceeding to the order process. To order an image you can email, fax, phone or post the details to us.
