About

The 9000 images available on this site are taken from Glasgow City Archives and Special Collections, both of which are based in The Mitchell Library in Glasgow. A small number are from private owners and Glasgow Museums. They were originally digitised in the late 1990s as part of a project that was partly funded by the Scottish Office Challenge fund.

The selected material is of local and historical interest, featuring Glasgow's buildings and streets as well as showing Glasgow's people going about their daily lives. Photographs form the basis of the collection, but older prints and lithographs from the Glasgow Collection are also included. Some modern photographs, particularly of areas which have greatly changed in recent decades, provide interesting reference points.

The images on this website are only a small selection of the thousands held in Glasgow City Archives and Special Collections.

Glasgow City Archives are housed in the Mitchell Library and include the official records of various local authorities as well as a large number of private archive collections.

Special Collections are also based in The Mitchell Library. The department cares for over 500 collections that vary in size and significance. It collects, manages, and offers access to Mitchell Library collections including family history, Glasgow local history and heritage, newspapers, maps, photographs, rare books, manuscripts, ephemera, and some artworks.
