About

When Sir Thomas Lipton died in 1931, he bequeathed to the Mitchell Library, his collection of albums of newspaper cuttings relating to his business activities, his attempts to win the America’s Cup and his knighthood. The Mitchell also received 48 photograph albums and the guest book from his yacht, ‘Erin’. His collection of yachting trophies were bequeathed to Glasgow Museums.

By the end of the 1990s the collection was beginning to show signs of deterioration and Unilever, which now owns the Lipton brand, funded the conservation and digitisation costs for this website. Some of the images on the website have been reproduced with the kind permission of Unilever. The original materials are available for consultation in Special Collections at The Mitchell Library. Glasgow Museums and Collections manages the collections of the city including Special Collections at The Mitchell Library. Please contact us for more information.
